How to move from 6.0 to 6.5 on IELTS Task 2
A common IELTS Writing Task 2 goal is to move practice from around 6.0 to 6.5. Those numbers are goals for the next sitting, not labels on a published essay.
This article is that boundary: what usually has to change in a Task 2 response when 6.5 is the writing threshold you are aiming at. It is not a gallery of finished essays, not a promise that a sitting will produce 6.5, and not an explanation of how Estimated Band is produced.
Treat 6.0 and 6.5 as goals, not results
When a practice Grade Report shows figures near 6.0, treat them as a practice estimate. Practice estimate only. Not an official IELTS score. How those figures are produced is a different page: How Estimated Band works.
The 6.5 writing threshold is a common target on Task 2. Use it as a direction for the next Outline and the next timed sitting. Do not treat a practice figure as a test-day result, and do not treat this article as a claim that practice will move you there.
What usually changes at the 6.0 to 6.5 boundary
A practice 6.0 Task 2 often already looks like an essay: an introduction, two body paragraphs, a conclusion. The 6.5 goal is not a new shape. It is control at the places the 6.0 sitting still leaks.
Every part of the Prompt has a paragraph job. If the question has two parts, both parts need development, not a sentence at the end of one paragraph.
The position, when the Prompt asks for one, is named early and held. A 6.0 sitting often restates both sides and postpones the judgement. A 6.5 goal names the extent or the choice in the Outline, then keeps it through the conclusion.
Each body paragraph develops one idea. Listing two reasons in one paragraph without support is a typical leak. Name the support in the Outline, then write that paragraph.
Fewer slips that force the reader to re-parse a sentence. The 6.5 goal is not a new vocabulary list. It is fewer recurrent errors that hide the position you already chose.
Those jobs sit across the four Traits the exam uses as public categories — Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. This article is the overall 6.0 to 6.5 move. It is not a diagnosis of one Trait, and it is not a restyle of official tables.
The Outline still matters. What each paragraph must do is How to plan an IELTS Writing Task 2 essay. Whether you can still do it in about 40 minutes is How to practice IELTS Task 2 under timed conditions.
Example
Example. An original Prompt invented for this illustration (not an official task, not a finished essay):
Local governments should spend more on public libraries than on sports centres. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
A common leak when the goal is still around 6.0 (jobs, not sentences of the essay):
- Opening restates libraries versus sports centres but delays the extent of agreement.
- Body 1 argues for libraries; body 2 argues for sports centres; the conclusion never names a degree.
- The sitting covers both sides without a held position — a typical gap on the way to a 6.5 goal.
Toward a 6.5 goal on the same invented Prompt:
- Outline names the extent first (agree more than disagree, because libraries serve more daily uses; sports centres still matter, so the judgement is not “never fund sport”).
- Intro job: name the trade-off and the extent.
- Body 1 job: libraries reach more people, more often; that supports spending more on them.
- Body 2 job: sports centres are worth funding, but as a smaller or shared share, not the larger one.
- Conclusion job: restate the same extent; no new claim.
That is the whole illustration — short, original, and not a finished Task 2 essay. It is not labelled as a sample, and it has no overall figure attached.
What this article is not
Not a sample gallery. There is no finished Task 2 essay here to copy, and no essay labelled with a 6.5 figure. Teaching illustrations stay jobs and spans, not finished pieces to imitate.
Not a promise of improvement. Practice can target the 6.0 to 6.5 boundary. It cannot stand in for a test-day result.
Not a second URL for 6.5 to 7.0. That is a different goal. This page stays the 6.0 to 6.5 move on Task 2.
Not Task 1, and not GT letters. Charts, graphs, and letters are a different paper. This goal is IELTS Writing Task 2 only.
Not how Estimated Band is produced. Method, the four Trait figures, and 0.5 steps live on How Estimated Band works. This article uses those numbers only as learner goals. Practice estimate only. Not an official IELTS score.
Practice toward the 6.5 goal
Write one Task 2 Prompt under the clock, then read a practice Grade Report as feedback on the essay you finished — not as an official result.
If the position is missing, the next Outline must name it before you write. If a part of the Prompt had no paragraph job, add one. If you ran out of time, the next sitting is timed rehearsal, not a longer untimed draft.
Do not collect finished essays to imitate. The 6.0 to 6.5 move is one Task 2 sitting at a time, aimed at a goal, with a practice estimate after — not a number to wear on a sample.
