Task Response in IELTS Task 2

You already know the four Trait names. The sitting still fails Task Response: the Task 2 essay does not actually answer the question on the page.

This article diagnoses that one Trait on Task 2 — no clear position, missing parts, under-developed ideas. It is not a restyle of official tables, and it is not one URL per Trait. The four-Trait explainer, and the PDFs it links, live on IELTS Writing band descriptors.

What Task Response is checking on Task 2

Task Response is whether a reader can find an answer to this Prompt. The other three Traits — Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy — can look tidy while Task Response still fails.

A practice Grade Report may show Task Response as the leak. Practice estimate only. Not an official IELTS score. Treat that figure as a prompt to diagnose the essay, not as a test-day result.

On Task 2, the usual leaks are three: the position is missing or delayed, a part of the Prompt has no paragraph job, or an idea is named and then left thin.

Three leaks that show up as Task Response

No clear position. When the Prompt asks for a view, a degree, or a choice, the Outline has to name it before you write. A sitting that restates both sides and postpones the judgement until a last sentence — or never names it — does not give the reader a view that belongs to the question.

Missing parts. If the Prompt has two parts, both parts need development, not a clause tacked onto the conclusion. If it asks “to what extent,” a yes or no without a degree is still a missing part.

Under-developed ideas. Listing two reasons in one paragraph without support is a typical leak. The paragraph names a claim and then moves on. Task Response is not a word count; it is whether the idea is actually taken somewhere.

Those three leaks are this article. They are not a copy of official cell wording, and they are not a diagnosis of the other Traits.

Example. An original Prompt invented for this illustration (not an official task, not a finished essay):

Some people think universities should focus on job skills. Others think they should focus on academic subjects. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

A common Task Response leak (jobs, not sentences of the essay):

• Opening restates job skills versus academic subjects and does not name a view.
• Body 1 argues for job skills; body 2 argues for academic subjects; the conclusion says both matter and never chooses.
• “Give your own opinion” had no paragraph job — a missing part, not a wording problem.

Toward a sitting that answers this Prompt:

• Outline names the opinion first (universities should keep academic subjects as the core, and add job skills as a smaller share — not replace the core).
• Intro job: name both views and the opinion.
• Body 1 job: why academic subjects remain the core (the view you will hold).
• Body 2 job: why job skills still belong, as a smaller or shared share — that is the “discuss both,” not a second essay.
• Conclusion job: restate the same opinion; no new claim.

That is the whole illustration — short, original, and not a finished Task 2 essay. It is not labelled as a sample, and it has no overall figure attached.

What this article is not

Diagnose, then write the next Outline

Read a practice Grade Report as feedback on whether the essay answered the Prompt — not as an official result. Practice estimate only. Not an official IELTS score.

If the position is missing, the next Outline must name it before the first sentence. If a part of the Prompt had no paragraph job, add one. If an idea was named and left thin, name the support in the Outline, then write that paragraph.

Do not collect finished essays to imitate. Task Response on Task 2 is one sitting at a time: answer this Prompt, with a held position, every part covered, and ideas taken far enough that a reader can follow the view.
